When we lucid dream, we are in the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) state of sleep, which is also our natural dream state. There are five stages of sleep, and REM sleep is the last stage. This is why we may be able to remember more, as it happens before we awaken.

Lucid dreams tend to be extra vivid and colorful. They may also feel rather strange and nonsensical. However, they can also give us insights and clues into what is happening to us in other realms.

Is Lucid Dreaming Safe?

When we dream, our souls often leave our physical bodies and travel astral. Lucid dreaming is usually safe. However, if you do not feel safe or you see and sense darkness in your lucid dream, wake up and call in the angels to remove what is not for your greater good.

Too much lucid dreaming is not good for us, as it leaves us drained and not replenished.

6 Lucid Dreaming Techniques to Help You Get Started

There are many tips and techniques to help you learn how to lucid dream. But remember, you also need to learn how to pull yourself out of a lucid dream and even say no if you are too tired to lucid dream.

Learning to lucid dream takes time, and you need to ask yourself why and how lucid dreaming would help you. What is the benefit for you to do this?

#1) Set an Intention Before Sleep

When you go to sleep, set an intention for your sleep state on what you would like to achieve. You can do this through meditation.

#2) Keep a Dream Journal to Track and Recall Dreams

Journaling your lucid (and other) dreams can help you to learn how to connect the dots to see what is happening. You want to look at lucid dreaming as pieces to the puzzle. Keep a notepad next to you with a pen so you can quickly jot down or scribble what you have experienced.

#3) Practice Reality Checks Throughout the Day

The movie, Inception, with Matt Damon, is about lucid dreaming and he has to create certain reality checks so that he knows where he is and is he awake or asleep. Some forms of reality checks can be to keep a coin or other small object near or on you while sleeping. You can also do physical moves such as pinching your nose shut. If you keep breathing, you are in a lucid dream. You can also ask to look at yourself in a mirror and if you don’t look like yourself, that is an indication you are lucid dreaming.

#4) Try the Wake-Back-to-Bed (WBTB) Method

This involves going into a REM state while you still have a level of consciousness about you. You enter the REM state while awake, you can also set an alarm to wake up for those moments when you may think you are in a REM state. The go back to sleep.

#5) Use Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD) Technique

Author Stephen La Berge, Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming, created this technique:

When you fall asleep, begin to think of one of your most recent dreams that you recall.  Look for something in that dream that is off or not natural, such as flying. This is considered to be a ‘dream sign, a sign that you are, in fact, dreaming. The next time you dream, make the request to remember that you are dreaming.

#6) Create a Sleep Environment That Supports Dream Clarity

Make sure that your sleeping environment is relaxing, stress-free, and clutter-free. Our subconscious minds cannot fully relax if our home office is in our bedroom, a stack of bills needs to be paid, or piles of laundry are around us. Lucid dreaming or not, having a clean and clutter-free sleep environment will help us rest, rejuvenate, and repair ourselves fully.

It is quite possible to have interactions with others while lucid dreaming. While changing careers, I have a client who began lucid dreaming with whom he now realizes are a part of his new career. He had met them in his lucid dreams. They had already begun the new work, which is a humanitarian type of work, while lucid dreaming. It was as if he got a running start without knowing it!
